A new initiative aims to equip Black and marginalized entrepreneurs in Sarasota's Newtown community with essential tools for success.

SCORE Manasota, in collaboration with community bank BayFirst, has launched "Small Business Development for Minority Entrepreneurs," a free seminar series designed to provide business knowledge and mentorship to aspiring and established small business owners.

BayFirst, a community bank that opened in Newton last January, has been working to create programs and resources that work best for those in the immediate area of the Newtown branch. Through community surveys and meetings with local housing organizations and leaders, BayFirst has been modified and expanded a handful of programs that directly benefit residents of Newtown

“This program is about more than just education—it’s about empowering our local business owners to become better stewards of their money and helping them thrive in a challenging economic landscape,” said Carlos Yancy Sr., a business development specialist at BayFirst and a third-generation Newtown resident.

The initiative is funded by a Sarasota Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) grant, with support from the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce and Opportunities for All. Kirk Bradley played a key role in securing the funding.

“This partnership with SCORE allows us to bring professional-grade resources directly to the community for free," said Joe McKenzie, BayFirst branch manager. "We’re meeting people where they are and providing access to the tools they need to succeed.”

The sessions will take place at the Robert Taylor Community Center, 1845 John Rivers St., Sarasota. Registration begins at 11 a.m., followed by the seminar from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided, and attendees can access one-on-one mentorship. Each session is limited to 20 participants to ensure personalized guidance.

Seminar Schedule:

  • Jan. 14: Loans, Grants, and Other Funding Options for Small Businesses

  • Feb. 11: Eight Practical Skills to Run a Successful Business

  • March 11: Getting Your Banker to Say, “Yes”

  • April 8: Effective Networking Skills to Grow Your Small Business

  • April 29: Is Your Business a Good Investment?

  • May 13: Marketing Magic – Attract and Engage Your Ideal Customer
